Miss Earth contestants underscore importance of solid waste management

ILOILO CITY, Nov. 17 – Contestants for the Miss Earth 2009 during their press conference Tuesday at Hotel del Rio here in Iloilo City stressed the importance of solid waste management as they expressed their concern on the present day environmental degradation.
Sandra Seifert, who traces her roots in Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, said that she has for her personal advocacy the implementation of solid waste management because of the many garbage littered around.
She said that plastics particularly cause clogging on the streets that the people have to be taught on how to properly discard of it.
“As a contestant to Miss Earth I can inspire people to take the responsibility upon themselves,” Seifert contended.
This is also what Amy Diaz who is representing the United States of America has said. She said that by being a title holder people usually take time out to listen to them and so they have better opportunity to do their advocacy.
Lateesha Ector representing Canada said that in all the places they have gone to here in the Philippines during the Miss Earth contest she has been emphasizing on the 3Rs of solid waste management which are reuse, recycle and reduce the garbage.
She said that the strict observance of the proper waste disposal is what had made their country known for its clean and green program.
Korean Yeju Park also appealed to her fellow Koreans here in the Philippines to help protect the environment and not to throw their garbage anywhere.
The press conference is held prior to the holding of the Talent Night at the Rose Memorial Auditorium in Central Philippine University at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
During the Talent Night there will be 15 contestants who have been pre-selected who will showcase their talents. The grand coronation night will be on November 22 at the Boracay Eco Village Resort Convention Center in Boracay Island. (PNA) LAP/AJP/vlo
