MANILA, Nov. 17 — Former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro and former Optical Media Board chairperson Edu Manzano on Thursday will be officially proclaimed the official standard-bearers of the Lakas-Kampi-CMD political party for the 2010 presidential elections, it was confirmed Tuesday.

On the same day, Teodoro will take over the leadership of the party, while party stalwarts President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Eduardo Ermita and Gabriel Claudio, among others, will officially resign their respective party posts, according to political strategist Reli German.

German is the political campaign chief of Manzano, and is also helping with Teodoro’s campaign. He clarified that only the candidates for President and Vice President will be proclaimed on that day.

Thursday’s event at the Philippine International Convention Center sets the stage for the Lakas-Kampi-CMD to show its strength and numbers, according to German, debunking claims by rivals in the Nationalista and Liberal political parties that they are the potent forces to win the 2010 elections.

German emphasized that Lakas-Kampi-CMD dominates the local government units and that the reconstituted party will sail on to victory in 2010.

He said that “surveys showing the lead of the Benigno Aquino III-Mar Roxas tandem does not reflect the true will of the people. They don’t necessary translate into votes,” the veteran lobbyist said. "We have learned that even the D, E classes will go for platforms and vote on that basis, not just on star presence." He was referring to the presumed drawing power of Kris Aquino, Sharon Cuneta, Vilma Santos and even Korina Sanchez in the LP campaign trail.

He cited the time when then presidential candidate Macapagal-Arroyo “was much way, way behind” Fernando Poe Jr. at the start of presidential surveys in the 2004 elections, but overwhelmingly overtook the movie actor as election day neared.

He also said that both Teodoro and Manzano are “articulate, intelligent, and smart with people” and in that respect have the edge over the LP candidates. He noted that for this coming election, Aquino, who he said, merely rides on the coat tails of his parents’ fame and reputation with no accomplishments of his own–adds to the anxiety and disappointment of would-be voters.

The political strategist added that the Teodoro-Manzano tandem is the only team that has so far articulated its platform of government: “Galing at Talino” and the protection of children and women from exploitation.

Teodoro is forthright about his lagging in the survey, hinting that he has not gone with his advertisements full-blast because of elections prohibitions against premature campaigning. Under the laws, campaigns are to be run only after the deadline for filing a candidacy. This year, the deadline is set for November 30.

Informal surveys indicated that Teodoro, a bar topnotcher and a master's degree holder in law from Harvard University but low-keyed despite his academic achievements and family background — is the “most presidentiable-looking” of the aspirants to Malacanang. “He is also very approachable,” a media person said.

The Teodoro-Manzano tandem “is a fantastic new team with dynamism,” German described his principals. (PNA)
