MANILA, Nov. 17 — The House of Representatives on Tuesday evening dismissed with finality the impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Ma. Merceditas Gutierrez due to "insufficiency in substance."

By a vote of 172 in favor to dismiss the impeachment complaint reporas against 15, and one abstention, on the House committee report 2483 on House Resolution 1483, a resolution dismissing the impeachment complaint against Ombudsman Gutierrez, the House dismissed with finality the impeachment complaint against the Ombudsman.

The complaint was filed by former Senate president Jovito Salonga and 30 other civil society leaders last March. It charged the Ombudsman with betrayal of public trust and culpable violation of the 1987 Constitution in the handling of several controversial cases.

These include the Mega Pacific and corruption case against former Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair Benjamin Abalos Sr., the World Bank mess regarding the sanctioning of three Filipino construction firms over alleged collusion, and the P728-million fertilizer fund scam, among others.

Gutierrez has repeatedly denied the allegations. (PNA)
