PNP's gun amnesty nets 14,242 firearms in Northern, Northeastern Mindanao regions

BUTUAN CITY, Nov. 13 -– The Philippine National Police (PNP) has registered at least 14,242 firearms in Northern and Northeastern Mindanao regions under the Final and General Firearms Amnesty (FGFA) program.

The highest number of registered firearms under the FGFA program is in Northern Mindanao with 8,083. They were registered at regional police headquarters of Police Regional Office 10 (PRO 10), Camp Alagar, Cagayan de Oro City.

The regional command of Northeastern Mindanao Police Regional Office 13 (PRO 13) at Camp Rafael C. Rodriguez, Butuan City, also registered 6,159 since last week.

On Friday, PRO 13 chief of operation and plans division Senior Supt. Nestor M. Fajura said that 2,250 were newly registered loose firearms and 1,100 for renewal, voluntary surrendered or captured during police operations.

PRO 13 Regional Director Chief Supt. Lino D. Calingasan ordered regional and provincial mobile group commanders and city and provincial directors to step up the FGFA program in their respective areas of jurisdictions.

PRO 10 Regional Director Chief Supt. Danilo T. Empedrad, also said "Bilang Boga" (BB) campaign has already netted 7,681 firearms while the "Kontra Boga" (KB) campaign a total of 402 firearms.

Adopted from the Tagalog word "boga" which means firearm in English, "Bilang Boga" (Firearms Count) and "Kontra Boga" (Unlicensed Firearms), both campaigns have been implemented by PNP-10 and PRO-13 relative to the FGFA pursuant to Executive Order 817 of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The BB campaign in PRO-10 resulted in the registration of some 1,731 unregistered firearms, 3,433 un-renewed firearms and 2,517 juridical firearms while the KB campaign accounted for 177 firearms confiscated from threat groups and 225 firearms from criminal elements.

Registering the most number of 2,147 firearms was the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) followed by the Bukidnon Provincial Police Office (PPO) with 1,301 firearms and the Firearms and Explosives, Security Agency and Guards Section (FESAGS) of PNP-10 with 1,276 firearms.

This was followed by the Misamis Occidental PPO, 1,196 firearms; Iligan City PO, 841; Lanao del Norte PPO, 731; Misamis Oriental PPO, 449; and Camiguin PPO, with 92.

The FGFA will last until end of November. (PNA)
