LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 9 — Albay province has secured P6 million worth of accident insurance from the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) for the 33,700 village officials and 62,100 senior citizens in this premiere province of Bicol.

Albay Gov. Joey S. Salceda said the accident insurance benefits to be given to thousands of village officials and senior citizens is design to further enhance the social protection of local officials and elderly.

The cards are already being processed and will be soon distributed by the board members to the beneficiaries.

“Our barangay and SK officials, barangay tanods, health workers and day care workers are the front liners of the provincial government in the fight against climate change and natural disasters, in the delivery of social services and in the pursuit of economic development.

“In this fight against typhoons, eruptions, disease, hunger, ignorance and poverty, our ground forces must be armed with the necessary tools so they be well motivated”, Salceda said.

The insurance benefit is on top of the year-round and yearly training programs and technical assistance provided to barangay officials on disaster preparedness and response by Albay Public Safety Emergency Management Office(APSEMO) as well as climate change adaptation by Center of Initiative and Research for Climate Adaptation (CIRCA).

Also, cash incentives to barangay officials for their contribution to preemptive evacuation, A(HINI) preparedness and climate change adaptation programs as well as the Barangay Health Workers, Day Care Workers, Tanods and Lupons will also soon be received.

Benefiting from the insurance coverage are 19,410 barangay officials and elderly in the 1st District covering five towns and a city; 20,236 – 2nd District with four towns and a city; 22,400- 3rd Dist with six towns and a city; for a total of 95,863 beneficiaries.

The senior citizens will also be provided accident insurance as part of the sectoral social assistance especially those vulnerable and least capable of protection, although unlike barangay officials their package does not include burial assistance.

Salceda said that this enhances the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office’s regular programs to serve the senior citizens of the province. This is in line with our revised and revision provincial goal of “safe and shared development”.

“The legacy we wish to build for Albay is to become the most socially progressive province of the country”, Salceda said. (PNA)
