UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 7 – The United Nations (UN) on Friday kicked off a campaign mobilizing people worldwide to take part in efforts to stop men's violence against women (VAW).
UN Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) launched a website to inspire individual VAW eradication efforts like reaching out to school students, volunteering at local shelters, advocating for legislation or donating funds for programs protecting females.
The Say NO Unite to End VAW initiatives website also aims to draw public action to this problem as “estimates say around 70 percent of all women have been victim to some kind of violence.“
The website likewise seeks to show rising support for anti-VAW efforts by counting action done to combat this scourge.
“We know that VAW is a problem with solutions,” said UNIFEM Executive Director Ins Alberdi after visiting patients at a one-stop health clinic for women victims of sexual violence in Nairobi, Kenya. “What I have seen first-hand today in Kenya is the impact of effective work at the grassroots level yet there is an urgent need for governments to make this issue a top priority and take decisive action.,”
Counting efforts by individuals, governments and civil society groups, the campaign targets 100,000 actions by March 2010 and one million by this time next year.
To encourage more anti-VAW efforts, luxury watch manufacturer Omega pledged ,000 for the campaign's first 50,000 initiatives registered on the website, thanks to efforts by UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador and Hollywood star Nicole Kidman, a UN press release.
Throughout November, multi-lingual broadcast program Euro News will air a public service announcement featuring her.
This announcement will call on every individual to say 'No' to all forms of violence. (PNA/APP)

i think it’s high time that women should not be treated as the lesser sex. we have rights too and nobody has the right to impose violence on us. women should learn how to fight for their rights.
