MANILA, Oct. 31 — The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) deployed rescue teams and facilities from different defense and police agencies to Regions 3, 4-A, and 5 as well as Metro Manila as part of preparations for the expected onslaught of typhoon "Santi" between dawn of Saturday and Sunday.

In a briefing for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, NDCC chairman and concurrent Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. announced the deployment of the rescue teams as follows: the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is the lead agency for Valenzuela, Caloocan City, Malabon, and Navotas; the Philippine National Police (PNP) for Quezon City, San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Manila; the Armed Forces National Capital Region Command for Marikina, Pateros, Taguig, Pasig, Makati, and Paranaque; and the Philippine Coast Guard for Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, and the lakeshore towns of Laguna de Bay.

Teodoro said the PNP-NCR will ensure the timely arrival of food caravans and other rescue assets to their intended destinations, the evacuation centers. “As much as possible, we will stop the giving of relief goods on the streets,” he said.

Since there are enough relief items in Northern Luzon, NDCC will also “augment the relief items for the south, particularly in the Bicol region and other parts of Southern Luzon,” Teodoro said. (PNA)
