ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct. 23 — The Philippine National Police (PNP) has deployed fresh troops to hunt down the Abu Sayyaf bandits in the island province of Sulu, south of this city.

Zamboanga Peninsula Police Office (ZPPO) spokesman Supt. Jose Bayani Gucela said the troops were deployed last Wednesday immediately upon their arrival in this southern port city.

According to Gucela, the troops composed of two companies of combatant policemen came from Calabarzon and Region 8.

Gucela said they will replace the policemen from Regions 6 and 7 that were deployed to Sulu eight months ago.

He said the policemen were briefed of the situation, the culture of the people as well as the possible threats they would confront before the send-off ceremony held Wednesday.

The policemen from Regions 6 and 7 have recently figured in a firefight against the Abu Sayyaf bandits when the bandits tried to attack a military camp in Jolo, the capital of Sulu.

Gucela said the policemen will be placed under the operation and control of Task Force BAND-IT headed by Supt. Bienvenido Latag. (PNA)
