MANILA, Oct. 23 — The Valenzuela local government earlier this week has inaugurated 53 new classrooms that can accommodate more than 5,000 elementary and high school students.

The brand-new educational facilities cost more than P84.68 million to complete.

Valenzuela Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian said the new classrooms are located at the Paltok Elementary School in Barangay. Veinte Reales, Polo National High School, Vicente P. Trinidad National High School in Brgy. Punturin and Bignay National High School.

"Education is the foundation of a country and the building block of its citizen's social justice and self-worth, and so, it is in the front line of the city's budget," Gatchalian said.

During the inauguration ceremony, the principals, parents, teachers and students welcomed the mayor who was joined by City Councilors Jun Santiago, Cora Cortez and Gerry Esplana, together with the local barangay officials, former Vice Mayor Antonio Espiritu and Uly Aguilar from the office of 1st District Representative Cong. Rex Gatchalian.

Officials from DepEd-Valenzuela City lead by DepEd-Valenzuela City Division Superintendent Dr. Flordeliza Mayari also joined the ceremonies. Dr. Mayari lauded Gatchalian's efforts to raise the standard of education in the city.

Many elementary and high school buildings in different barangays are still under construction and will be ready for occupancy in the coming weeks.

The city government is continually building more classrooms to accommodate the constantly growing number of Valenzuelano students and to meet the city's target of 45:1 classroom to student ratio. The current ratio is at 58 to over 60 students to classroom ratio. The number of students has been constantly rising, with an average rate of 3.4 percent during the past three school years.

Existing classrooms are, likewise, regularly being inspected to determine which ones need repairs. More funds are being allocated each year for education. This year, Valenzuela City government allotted P169,028,426.14 for the construction of new school facilities alone. (PNA)
