15th Siargao International Surfing Cup ’09 reels off in Surigao del Norte

GENERAL LUNA, Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte, Oct. 20 – The “15th Siargao International Surfing Cup ‘09” will open with big festivities lined up beginning Wednesday at Cloud 9, General Luna town, in this scenic paradise island of Surigao del Norte province.

The massive waves off Siargao Island’s famous Cloud 9 take global limelight anew as the best surfers coming from 48 countries will compete in the weeklong activities here on October 21-27.

Dubbed as “Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational 2009”, top surfers from around the world will compete for the top prize of US$ 30,000 which is presented once again by surfing giant Billabong Australia, Department of Tourism (DOT) and the provincial government of Surigao del Norte.

Local ace and reigning champion Editor “Peso” Alcala, will get into a competition vest to defend his title.

Some surfing champions from United States of America, Hawaii, Australia, Brazil, Indonesia and Japan will take action in the big international surfing tourney.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano, along with provincial officials led by Gov. Robert Ace Barbers and Northeastern Mindanao DOT Regional Director Letty Tan, will be in the weeklong activity.

The opening at 11 o’clock in the morning on Wednesday’s opening ceremonies will be highlighted with several presentations including ethnic/cultural shows from the provincial and municipal governments.

Meanwhile, during the weeklong international surfing tourney here, several programs are also lined up to entertain the surfers, foreign and domestic tourists and other guests.

Part of the program is a fashion show of at least beauties of Miss Earth 2009, 2009 Beach Wear Fashion Competition, 2009 Dancing Competition and some coastal other sports competition.

Meanwhile, Chief Supt. Lino D. Calingasan, regional director of Police Regional Office 13 on Tuesday assured that full security measures is already in place for the foreign and domestic surfers and other invited foreign and local guests during the weeklong competition that will start on Wednesday morning.
