ZAMBOANGA CITY, Oct. 8 — A member of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered to the government authorities in Sarangani province, a military official said.

Capt. Emmanuel Garcia, Public Affairs Officer of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division, identified the NPA surrenderor as Kiton Mante Nongod alias Ka Tikyo, 19.

Garcia said Nongod voluntarily surrendered Wednesday and turned over a Thompson rifle to Lt. Col. Edgardo De Leon, chief of the 73rd Infantry Battalion.

Nongod, who is a member of the NPAs Front-71, told the military officials that he surrendered since he can no longer bear the hardships in the mountains with no food to eat.

He said he was convinced to lay down his firearms due to the relentless community outreach program of soldiers.

“The voluntary surrender of any rebel is a welcome development. With the help of local officials and the populace, we are positive that more will surrender and avail of the Social Integration program of the government so that they may go back into the mainstream of the society,” De Leon said.

The social integration program is a comprehensive livelihood and re-orientation system which is the newest move of the government to win back rebels into the folds of the law. (PNA)
