Davao light firm ships first truck-load of donations for Ondoy victims

DAVAO CITY, Oct. 8 – The Davao Light and Power Co. (DLPC) shipped the first truck-load of relief items for the thousands of victims of tropical storm “Ondoy” in Metro Manila and neighboring Luzon provinces and cities.

Davao Light’s Corporate Communications department head Rossano Luga said the donations were loaded on Tuesday on board an Aboitiz Transport System vessel in coordination with the Aboitiz logistics unit 2GO which offered free shipment for all in-kind assistance coursed through any member-company of the Aboitiz Group.

Luga said the in-kind donations will be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Manila, the agency that will distribute the relief goods to the intended victims.

He said the first shipment consists of 50 bags, 10 boxes and eight sacks of second hand clothing materials, three bags and five boxes of canned goods and food items, 10 sacks of rise, four boxes of assorted medicines, and 24 rolls of tissue paper. The donations came from both Davao Light customers and employees. The relief goods were mobilized in just a period of five days.

The units that are tasked to coordinate the relief assistance mobilization efforts said the response from both employees and the community was fast. On the very same day the mobilization was broadcast over the radio in-kind donations started pouring in at Davao Light’s drop-off centers at its C. Bangoy Administration office, at its Rondez Complex in Bajada, and at its Panabo City Branch office.

Meanwhile, company employees also donated cash.

Luga said as of October 5, the cash donation is almost P80,000, P5,000 came from a customer. This will be deposited in a special account opened at the City Savings Bank solely for the purpose of providing financial assistance to Ondoy's victims.

Davao Light officials expressed their thanks to all the donors for their trust in the company’s mobilization drive for donations to the calamity victims. They assured the donors that their donations will reach the intended beneficiaries and on time.

The next shipment of donations from Davao Light is expected on Friday, Luga added. (PNA) FFC/JGQ/lvp
