TUGUEGARAO CITY, Oct. 7 — In support to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts of Cagayan provincial government for Pepeng's victims, the Cagayan Provincial Environment and Natural Resources (PENRO) has committed to donate 27,000 board feet of lumber which will be used by the local government to help affected families restore their damaged houses.

PENRO Cagayan Officer Felix Taguba said that this volume would be the initial step of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in response to the call of the provincial government of Cagayan for a coordinated rehabilitation program.

Earlier, Cagayan Gov. Alvaro “Bong” Antonio asked PENRO Cagayan to release the illegally sold lumber confiscated since he assumed as governor of the province.

The governor, who is also the chair of the Cagayan Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC), said the volume of lumber confiscated in coordination with the Philippine National Police (PNP) had reached to about 114,000 board feet, and they are now under the custody of the local governments.

However, Taguba, a forester by profession, said that all 114,000 board feet could not be disposed to all typhoon victims as majority of these lumber are still subjects of court litigations.

“We have a lot of confiscations. But, many of these are pending in court. They are used as evidence,” Taguba said.

To effect the disposal of the 27,000 board feet of lumber, Taguba prepared a deed of donation to be signed by Regional Executive Director Laureano Lingan.

Hearing this news from Taguba, Antonio thanked DENR for its commitment to dispose 27,000 board feet of lumber for the repair of public and private infrastructures including the victims’ wrecked houses.

He immediately instructed the Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) to come up with a list of priority beneficiaries of said donation.

The governor also asked local and national government agencies particularly those whose offices were blown up by Pepeng to make proper request with his office if they need lumber. (PNA)
