BUTUAN CITY, Oct. 7 — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Wednesday cautioned some local government officials to refrain from issuing permit to cut trees in timberland.

In a press statement, the DENR-Caraga region also asked tree farmers to directly get their permit to cut tree from the DENR, saying “no one is authorized to issue permit to cut trees in the timberland” except the DENR.

The statement said the DENR is the only agency of the government that is mandated to be responsible for the conservation, management, development, and proper use of the country’s environment and natural resources.

Northeastern Mindanao DENR Regional Executive Director (RED) Edilberto S. Buiser has issued the clarification about the sole mandate of the DENR in the wake of reports reaching to the regional office here that some local government officials in the region are issuing permit to people to cut trees even for firewood purposes to augment the family’s meager income in the upland areas.

Buiser said the DENR is strict about the laws, rules and regulations on forestry in the region, hence, any person who cuts trees without asking the necessary permission from the DENR will be properly dealt with.

DENR Secretary Jose “Lito” L. Atienza, Jr. has been advocating on “plant and harvest only” principle as part of his main program.

Secretary Atienza explained that the people must be involved in the massive tree planting activity that seeks to restore the natural heritage as a nation with abundant trees rich with life and resources. (PNA)
