BOTOLAN, Zambales, Oct. 3 — Heavy rains generated by typhoon "Peping" battered this province Saturday, causing local rivers to overflow and flood anew low-lying areas of this municipality.
The rains with gusty winds persisted although the storm warning signal covering Zambales had been lifted.
As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, the Carael section of the Olongapo-Bugallon road was not passable to all types of vehicles due to floodwaters ranging from 0.60 to 0.80 meter in depth.
Governor Amor Deloso said he has instructed the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) to conduct pre-emptive evacuation in all the towns of Zambales, especially those living along the coastal areas.
Deloso said residents along the shores of Sta. Cruz town and in Barangay Bangan here have been evacuated and are now housed in the province’s designated evacuation centers.
It can be recalled that there was massive displacement of residents here last month due to floods caused by heavy rains spawned by typhoon "Kiko."
The rampaging floodwaters breached a portion of the San Juan dike along the Bucao River, one of the major catch basins of lahar from Mt. Pinatubo, and shifted the river course to nearby villages, forcing residents to flee their homes.
Thousands of families, composed mostly of women and children, are still housed in evacuation centers here due to torrential rains brought about by succeeding weather weather disturbances in recent weeks. (PNA)
