'Pepeng' maintains strength, 32 provinces under storm signal

MANILA, Oct. 2 — Typhoon "Pepeng" (international name: Pharma) has maintained its strength as it continues to move towards Aurora-Isabela area.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said as 4 a.m. Friday, Pepeng is located at 270 kms East of Virac, Catanduanes packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230 kph.

Pagasa said Pepeng is moving West Northwest at 19 kph.

According to the weather bureau, by Saturday morning, the howler will be at 90 km Northeast of Casiguran, Aurora and will make a landfall in Aurora-Isabela area by Saturday noon.

By Sunday morning, Pagasa said, Pepeng is at 60 km Southwest of Laoag City and Monday morning at 380 km West Northwest of Laoag City.

Areas with public storm warning signal No. 2, which will experience 60-100 kph winds, are Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Northern Quezon, Aurora, Polillo Islands.

Under signal No. 1 are Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Isabela, Mt. Province, Ifugao, Benguet, La Union, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Zambales, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Southern Quezon, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Burias Island, and Northern Samar.

These areas will have 30 to 60 kph winds, Pagasa said.

Pagasa advised residents in low-lying areas and near mountain slopes under signal numbers 2 and 1 to take all the necessary precautionary measures against possible flashfloods and landslides.

It said those living along the coast under signal number 2 are advised to be on alert against big waves generated by the typhoon.

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions, Pagasa said. (PNA)
