MANILA, Sept. 30 — Authorities raised warning that a supertyphoon might whip northern part of the country as typhoon "Pepeng" officially makes entry into Philippine territories Wednesday afternoon.

"Pepeng, unlike Ondoy, will bring destructive winds. It is still in the ocean as may further strengthen in the coming days. Pepeng is comparable to Milenyo or Reming," Nathaniel Cruz, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

The eye of Typhoon Pepeng was spotted 940 kms East of Surigao City as of 2 p.m., Cruz said.

Pepeng is rampaging over the Pacific Ocean, still gathering power with maximum sustained winds 120 kilometers near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

A "Super-typhoon" is a term utilized by the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center for typhoons that reach maximum sustained winds of at least 150 mph.

Pepeng is moving West Northwest, towards northern Luzon, at 22 kph.

In 2006, super typhoon Milenyo, (international name Xangsane) was a deadly typhoon that affected the Philippines. It toppled billboards and left hundreds homeless in Metro Manila.

Also in 2006, another supertyphoon struck Bicol Region, east of the Philippines. Supertyphoon Reming, (international name Durian) was an intense storm that wreaked havoc in the Philippines, causing massive loss of lives when mudslides from the Mayon Volcano buried many villages.

Pepeng is seen to reach 630 kms East of Northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar by Thursday afternoon; 430 kms Northeast of Borongan, Samar by Friday afternoon; and 290 kms North Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 330 kms East of Casiguran, Aurora by Saturday afternoon.

No storm warning is raised anywhere in the country.

This disturbance is still too far to affect any part of the country within the next 24-36 hours, Pagasa's latest weather update said.

Cruz said that the fury of Pepeng will be initially felt in eastern sections of Visayas and Mindanao by Thursday afternoon, which will enhance the southwest monsoon.

It then shall lash Manila and the entire Luzon by Friday until Saturday, also enhancing southwest monsoon.

Meanwhile, good weather conditions, aside from light passing rains and thunderstorms can be expected in Metro Manila and some parts of the Visayas and Mindanao. (PNA) DCT/MPC

We are already experiencing this super typhoon here in Albay! As I am writing this I could feel the winds striking the glass windows of our house. I have stocked water because our place is a flood-risk area.

I also asked my brother to buy food in the grocery just in case.

I hope this typhoon will change its course. We cannot bear another typhoon like Reming of 2006.

    Please pray for our safety.

    It’s time to prepare!

Fear without creative action is a door to destruction…Please get out ot the area if the place is flood prone… just lock your doors and get out!

I will share our experience on survival with Typhoon Nitang later. But for now, get out and go to a higher and safer building. i hope the winds were not strong enough to break jalousies, and i hope you did not hear the howl of the winds as if
twenty million screaming hogs are racing through the sky…

Do keep safe, have a little foresight, foresight to avoid getting the falling roof, shattered windows and getting so wet for the rest of the storm…

    i am praying for you.
