MANILA, Sept. 16 – Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile believes that newly-chosen administration standard-bearer Gilbert Teodoro for the 2010 presidential elections can count on the votes of the Ilocanos, being the only one candidate who can fluently speak the Ilocano dialect.

”I will not underestimate him. Let’s put it that way. Of all the candidates, Secretary Teodoro is the only one who can speak fluently the Ilocano dialect,” Enrile, himself a pure-bloodied Ilocano from Cagayan, said.

Enrile said the Ilocanos belong to a large portion of the population of the country, numbering about five to seven million votes.

”You cannot just disregard the number of Ilocano voters all over the country. They’re all over the country. From Cagayan to Ilocos region, all the way to Mindanao, all the way to Mindoro,” he said.

However, Enrile clarified he will not throw his support to the National Defense secretary from Tarlac.

”I’m an Ilocano also but I have also my own candidate,” Enrile said, without mentioning name although he has already been joining former President Joseph Estrada in his provincial sorties. Estrada has said he is running in next year's presidential elections.

Meanwhile, Senators Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero and Manuel "Mar" Roxas II congratulated Teodoro, who was named presidential bet for 2010 by the Lakas-KAMPI-CMD during Wednesday morning's executive committee meeting.

”I congratulate Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno for clinching their party's nomination. I wish them well in their 2010 bid,” Escudero said.

Roxas said his former colleague in the House of Representatives has good intention of helping the country.

Escudero is one of the possible presidential candidates in the 2010 national elections while Roxas has opted to support the candidacy of Teodoro’s cousin, Senator Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III. (PNA) scs/jfm
