MANILA, Sept. 11 –Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim yielded to popular choice of not renaming the Manila Science High School (MSHS) to honor of the late President Corazon "Cory" C. Aquino.

The students and teachers of Manila Science High School said that while they love and respect the late former president, MSHS "is the first science high school in the Philippines and for that historical fact alone, it should retain its name."

Lim said he respects the students and alumni of the school. If they think it would be appropriate to retain the name of MSHS then he would not push the issue any further, the mayor said.

The Division of City Schools headed by Superintendent Dr. Ponciano Menguito held consultations on the matter and solicited from the alumni their comments on the issue through email.

The students, faculty and alumni of MSHS said the name of the late former president could be used in one of the school's buildings.

Lim said he merely suggested renaming the school after Mrs. Aquino, the renowned "icon of democracy.” (PNA) LAP/JES
