Bangkok to host int'l animation film festival

BANGKOK, Sept. 8 — People here are having chance to enjoy more than 40 animation films from all over the world since the first Bangkok International Animation Film Festival will be held later this Month.

At a press conference Tuesday, Thailand's Information and Communications Minister Ranongruk Suwanchawee highlighted the importance of the festival. "Animation Films are based on cultural and social aspects and is part of the 'Creative Economy' concept," she said.

During the festival, scheduled for Sept. 25-30, over 40 animations from the United States, Europe and Asia-Pacific area will be shown at local cinemas and compete for the Feature and Short Animation Film Awards.

Among the movies is a Chinese animation "The Magic Aster" directed by Yao Guanghua.

The opening film will be "Yona Yona Penguin," co-produced by Japan and France and the closing film "Ponyo on the Cliff" from Japan.

In her address, the minister also expressed hope that the event will help promote Thailand as the "movie location," seeking international cooperation to enhance the country's computer graphic and animation businesses to further build the domestic film industry to a success level as seen in France and South Korea.
