BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan, Aug. 28 – Aklan Rep. Florencio Miraflores has opposed the planned construction of another airport by a private firm on nearby Carabao Island in Romblon province.

Miraflores said that he has sought the help of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) in trying to block the construction.

"I was told by Aklan Tourism Council chair Vicky Ramos that the Romblon province is already preparing its own development master plan. The province of Aklan should join me in opposing the project," Miraflores said.

He said that the developer of the airport in Carabao Island is capitalizing on the Boracay Island, being an international destination.

The Carabao Island is situated just across Boracay.

Earlier, DOTC officials bared that the international airport in Carabao Island is still in the planning stage and has not yet officially reached the attention of the CAAP and the DOTC.

"Just recently I talked to the executives of the CAAP and they told me that they will be rejecting the planned construction of the Carabao Island Airport because it conflicts with the nearby Caticlan Airport," said Miraflores. (PNA) LAP/jca/JNAguirre/vlo

If Miraflores would like to stop the construction of another airport as an alternative point of arrival and departure in conjuntion with Boracay, he better rally all political parties in Aklan and MalacaƱang to upgrade the infrastructures and facilities of the province. At the present conditions, it lacks facilities to accommodate the influx of tourists in the province! It lacks sewer treatment plants, and other utilities modern cities have. The roads are okey except that they are narrow and are not suited to accommodate the flow of traffics from the airport to Kalibo and vicinity, especially roads going to Boracay! The capital, Kalibo also has inadequate hotels to lodge tourists, not to mention the very serious problems of tricycle pollutions around! The fumes emanating from the one-stroke engine of these tricycles are just so nauseating and hazardous to the health of every tourist visiting and also inhabitants of Kalibo.

Perhaps, tourists wouldd prefer to land in Carabao Island and Caticlan rather than in Kalibo because of this pollutions! One advantage of Carabao Island is that it is located very close to Boracay and the adjacent Island of Tablas, which also possesses a good and attractive beaches that are still pristine and undeveloped! Within itself, Carabao Island, possesses a pristine beach that can rival that of Boracay or any other beaches in the Philippines or abroad!
