Former Miss Philippines Edith Nakpil-Rabat dies

DAVAO CITY, Aug. 27 –- Former Miss Philippines Edith Nakpil-Rabat, wife of the late Mayor Francisco "Paking" Rabat of Mati, Davao Oriental, died at a Manila hospital Wednesday afternoon.

This was announced Thursday by her daughter, incumbent Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat who, however, did not disclose the illness which caused her mother's death.

Crowned Miss Philippines in 1955, Mrs. Edith Nakpil-Rabat was remembered for her efforts for the development of Mati, Davao Oriental.

She was the chairperson of Sambuokan Festival, a festivity that showcased the best of Mati. It was under her leadership that Sambuokan Festival had become the second most popular festival in Mindanao after Kadayawan Festival in Davao City.

Her husband, former Mati Mayor Francisco “Paking” Rabat, died of cancer on July 19, 2008.

The Rabat family is still facilitating the return of the remains of the former beauty queen to Mati, Davao Oriental from Manila. (PNA) scs/Jessie L. Casalda/lvp
