Climate change briefing and centennial celebration to highlight PGMA’s Baguio visit

MANILA, Aug. 27 — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will visit Baguio City Friday to preside over a climate change briefing and lead the “Builders of Baguio” awards highlighting the city’s centennial celebration.

Before Baguio, the President is scheduled to visit Lubao, Pampanga to attend mass celebrating the feast of St. Augustine at the St. Augustine Parish Church, and Tuguegarao City.

Upon arrival at the Mansion House, the President will be briefed by Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose "Lito" Atienza on the status of solid waste management in the Cordillera Autonomous Region (CAR) and Baguio City, and the status of the Upland Development Program in CAR.

Presidential Adviser on Climate Change Secretary Heherson Alvarez will discuss the status of the material recovery facility (MRF) of Santiago City in Isabela province and the protected area of Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park.

To moderate, if not avert the negative effects of climate change, the President has allotted her time every Friday to look into possible solutions and discuss environmental issues at the local level.

Climate change is the direct effect of global warming. It refers to any long-term change in the patterns of average weather of a specific region or the Earth as a whole.

On Friday evening, the President will induct the newly-elected officers of the Cordillera Indigenous Elected Women Leaders’ League (CINDEWOLL).

The following are the newly-elected officers of CINDEWOLL: Kalinga Governor Flordeliza Diasen as president; Atok, Benguet Mayor Concepcion Balao, vice president; Mountain Province Board Member Eufemia Lamen, secretary; Abra Board Member Nancy Lupang, assistant secretary; Tadian, Mt. Province Vice Mayor Febe Cawilan, treasurer; Kabayan, Benguet Councilor Madeline Meno, assistant treasurer; and Ifugao Vice Governor Nora Dinamling, auditor.

Office of External Affairs Undersecretary for Indigenous Peoples Josephine Dominguez is honorary president and Abra Lone District Rep. Cecilia Luna is honorary member.

The members are Benguet Board Member Florence Tingabaoen; Kibungan, Benguet Vice Mayor Susan Atayoc; Natonin, Mt. Province Mayor Ana Marie Banaag; and Calatit, Bontoc Kagawad Asuncion Diaz.

On Saturday (August 29), the President is slated to lead the awarding of the Builders of Baguio to men and women, institutions, and families who played key roles and made significant contributions to the development and progress of the city. (PNA) LAP/OPS/ssc
