PGMA orders DOTC to go after errant bus drivers

ALABEL, Sarangani, Aug. 25 — Angered by what she said was an unnecessary loss of lives in a series of bus accidents, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today ordered Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza to crack-down on reckless drivers.

“A lot of accidents involving passenger buses happened this week. The one in Lucena resulted in the death of eight people including mother and child, the President said at the Cabinet meeting held here. “I an very angry because of the unnecessary loss of lives.”

Two buses had collided on Maharlika Highway in Domoit, Quezon. Apart from the fatalities, four others suffered injuries.

She called on all stakeholders to discuss effective preventive measures.

From here, the President proceeded to Lucena to visit the victims.

An update from the Lucena police said that another passenger who was injured in the collision died Monday evening, raising the death toll to nine.

A week ago, a bus ran over a mother and her child on EDSA. The mother survived but the child was not as lucky. (PNA)
