MANILA, Aug. 21 — Some provinces in Mindanao will experience rains towards the weekend hence disaster-prone areas are warned, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Friday.

No tropical storm or cyclone is within the Philippine area of responsibility. However, Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms attributed to the southwesterly surface windflow prevailing over the region, and Visayas area.

Northern and Central Luzon, meanwhile, will have mostly cloudy skies and experience scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, Pagasa said.

The Pagasa is currently monitoring a weather disturbance 850 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes, which is likely to dump rains over parts of Luzon.

The Pagasa warned the public against the effect of rains, especially on residents living along mountainous areas which are prone to rain-induced landslides.

Last August 17, heavy rains were dumped in Cebu and Talisay Cities, causing separate incidents of collapsing of concrete wall, leaving three people dead and one injured.

The months of July and August are considered peak of the monsoon season, where storms and monsoon rains are intense.(PNA) LAP/MPC
