MANILA, Aug. 16 — Public utility jeepneys (PUJs) will no longer be allowed on Efipanio delos Santos avenue (EDSA) with the expected completion in 2010 of the Metro Rail Transit 3 and Light Rail Transit 1 link which will create a commuter railway loop traversing across Metro Manila's major cities.

Speaking at the "Balitaan sa Tinapayan" forum held in Sampaloc, Manila on Sunday, Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFB) chairman Alberto Suansing said apart from imposing a ban on public utility jeepneys on EDSA, they are also poised to implement a move that will lessen the number of passenger buses that ply the avenue.

Roberto Martin, President of the Pasang Masda, however, said his group will seek reconsideration from the LTFRB to allow PUJs to ply EDSA from Balintawak to Monumento for passengers who frequent the marketplace.

“Those who buy wet goods in Balintawak cannot utilize the LRT-MRT and even in air-conditioned buses because they cannot carry with them the wet goods (they regularly carry with them) in such transportation vehicles (LRT-MRT and air-con buses)," Martin pointed out.

The EDSA MRT portion that will link the West avenue terminal up to the LRT I Monumento station is undergoing construction and is expected for completion by yearend. With its projected completion, the EDSA-LRT loop that will create a railway commuter link across Quezon City and Manila, the cities of Pasay, Makati, Kaloocan and Mandaluyong via EDSA and Rizal-Taft avenue will be completed

Suansing said once the closing loop is finally completed, commuters could be able to utilize the LRT and MRT for their daily commute.

“This coming December, the public will see how it will operate as we will have a dry run. We are expecting that the commuters and passengers can use this in January, 2010,” he said.

Suansing said they will evaluate the plea of Pasang Masda.(PNA) /V3/JES/
