MANILA, Aug. 5 — President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and members of her Cabinet offered this morning a special mass for the late former president Corazon Aquino at the Heroes Hall of Malacanang.

The mass for the departed former leader was celebrated by Father Jerome Secillano and Father Wilson Chakkyath.

Garbed in black dress, President Arroyo joined the 8 a.m. ceremony a few hours after she arrived in Manila from her working visit to the United States and proceeding directly to the wake of Mrs. Aquino at the Manila Cathedral to pay her last respects.

Secillano, during the homily, said that it is the best time to reflect why some people would think negatively if somebody would want to pay the last respects to a departed loved one.

He added that sending sympathies and prayers to the family of the departed loved one is not a political move but a sincere gesture to condole with the bereaved members.

“Offering prayers and sympathy to the bereaved family is the most Christian thing to do,” he said.

The priest noted the special mass for Aquino is not only asking for her eternal repose but also for the unity of the Filipinos since the former leader brought democracy back to the country in 1986.

President Arroyo led the reading of the Novena Prayer for Mrs. Aquino asking the Almighty to grant eternal rest to the former president.

“We pray for the healing of unhappy feelings President Corazon Aquino’s death now leaves in our hearts. Be with us Lord, during our moments of sorrow and loneliness…” President Arroyo said as she recited a part of the novena. (PNA)
