MANILA, Aug. 5 — As former President Corazon Aquino was being taken from the Manila Cathedral in Intramuros to her final resting place at the family mausoleum at the Manila Memorial Park in Paranaque City Wednesday afternoon, condolences arrived from Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith.

Smith said the government and people of Australia join the Filipino people in celebrating the life, and mourning the passing away, of Mrs. Aquino, “a much respected figure in Australia.”

”Her courage was vital to returning her country to constitutional democracy, following the assassination of her husband in 1983,” the message of condolences went.

”Mrs. Aquino will be remembered for leading the People Power Revolution in 1986 after many years of authoritarian rule in the Philippines.

”Australia is a long-standing friend and partner of the Philippines, and is fortunate to count among its citizens many who have come from the Philippines.

”Our thoughts are with Mrs. Aquino’s family and the people of the Philippines as they mourn her loss," Smith said. (PNA)
