Malacanang backs proposal to declare Cory a hero

MANILA, August 3 —Malacanang on Monday said that it will not oppose the move to make the late President Corazon Aquino to become a hero but instead will support it.

Secretary to the Cabinet Silvestre Bello III said in a media briefing at the New Executive Building in Malacanang, that even President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo called the late President Cory a “national treasure” upon learning the death of the former President last Saturday.

President Arroyo was in her US trip when Mrs. Aquino succumbed to colon cancer early Saturday morning.

Bello said that it was possible that President Arroyo would consider the proposal after some consultations.

Makati City Jejomar Binay earlier said in a radio interview that Cory should be declare a hero since she was the icon of democracy and the first lady president not only in the Philippines but in Asian region.

There is also an effort in Congress to declare former President Aquino a hero for what she contributed in the country for bringing back the democracy.

The remains of Mrs. Aquino is now at the Manila Cathedral and his funeral was scheduled on Wednesday and will be buried beside her husband, late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., at the Manila Cathedral.

President Arroyo cut short her US trip to pay a last-respect for the Mrs. Aquino. President Arroyo declared August 5, burial day of Cory, as a special non-working holiday and also declared a 10-day national day of mourning from August 1-10.(PNA)
