MANILA, Aug. 1 -– President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will cut short her trip to the United States and return to Manila early next week, according to a message received today by Malacanang from Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita in New York City.

Ermita said the Chief Executive is slated to return by Monday to lead the Filipino people in grieving over the death of former President Corazon C. Aquino.

The 76-year-old Mrs. Aquino, the country's first woman president, passed away at the Makati Medical Center in Makati City early Saturday morning.

Secretary Ermita, who is in New York with the Chief Executive, said he would announce in a press conference at 11 a.m. Sunday (Manila time) what part of the President's trip would be cut.

According to Ermita, the President has a full schedule of meetings with American businessmen and an interview with CNBC’s Maria Bartiromo on Sunday.

President Arroyo's latest visit to the U.S. was highlighted by her historic meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Friday.

The President is originally scheduled to return to Manila Aug. 5. (PNA) scs/JCA
