Ermita recalls good old days with former President Aquino

MANILA, August 1 – Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita recalled the good old days with former President Corazon C. Aquino when he was still with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

“I was then President Aquino’s Deputy Chief of Staff of the AFP in 1988. After my retirement, I was designated as Undersecretary of National Defense of then Secretary Fidel V. Ramos,” Ermita said in an interview from Washington, DC., USA.

Ermita said former President Aquino’s statements during the EDSA revolution and the nine coup attempts against her administration gave strength to the spirits of the Filipinos to hang on.

“Former President Aquino was very strong and very resolute in holding on to her post. It was evident on how she gives orders through then AFP Chief of Staff General Fidel Ramos who was personally in contact with the former Commander-in-Chief every time there are destabilization plots,” he said.

He was the Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines during the series of coup attempts from 1986 to 1988, and Undersecretary of National defense during the last major coup attempt in December 1989.

Ermita was also head of the Special Information group during the EDSA People Power Revolution in February 1986; President, Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association, 1986-1988

He took his Defense Resource Management Course at Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, California, U.S.A. from 1978-1979. (PNA)
