Chess: San Sebastian, Letran stretch wins in the 85 NCAA season

MANILA, July 27 — Defending champion Colegio San Juan de Letran blanked Emilio Aguinaldo College, 4-0, even as last year’s runner-up San Sebastian College-Recoletos blasted Arellano University, 4-0, to push their luck in the second round of the Junior division 85th season of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Chess Team Championships Sunday at the ground floor Cyberzone area of SM City, Manila.
Letran and San Sebastian, raised their total perfect 8 points to share the lead after two rounds of play, in this annual event with chief arbiter IA/NM Elias Lao.
Jan Jodilyn Fronda led the Letran squad beating Dexter Saquilayan after 48 moves of Sicilian Defense on Board 1; Cherry Ann Mejia nipped Clinton Verano after 25 moves of Sicilian Defense on Board 2; Christian Drapete subdued Jeune Mabanag after 49 moves of Center Counter on Board 3 and Mary Joyce Fuerte crushed Rey Mano after 54 moves of Sicilian Defense on Board 4 to complete shut-out victory.
The Staglets, bannered by Aldous Coronel stopped Yuan Oliver Reyes after 37 moves of London System Opening on Board 1; Kristian Cristobal dumped John Patrick Sychangco after 43 moves of English Opening on Board 2, John Dimaliwat subdued Erl Buenaventura after 17 moves of Sicilian Defense on Board 3 and Anternee Bonifacio smashed time in an 8-move victory over Alec Jade Padua in their Giuco Piano skirmish on Board 4.
CSB-La Salle Greenhills, took a bye in the first round then hammered Mapua Institute of Technology, 3-1, while San Beda College whacked Jose Rizal University, 3-1.
Jan Nigel Galan, Emmanuel Songcuya and Alfonso Baldomero Ramos carry the fight for the La Salle Greenhills while 83rd season individual gold medalist Mikhail Luc Loja edged Miguel Lahoz on Board 2 in a tricky end game of the English Duel to prevent a possible shut-loss for Mapua Cardinals.
Galan outplayed Ryan Simbulan after 26 moves of Petroff Defense on Board 1, Songcuya nipped Marco Rodriguez after 27 moves of Pirc Defense on Board 3 while Ramos beat Matthew Cheng after 21 moves of Reti Opening.
The 85th season NCAA with this year’s theme is “Winning drive @85” has attracted star-studded top chess coaches in the land.
Letran is handled by NM Roland Joseph Perez, San Sebastian is under the watchful eye of NM Homer Cunanan, CSB-La Salle Greenhills mentored by NM Erwin Carag, Mapua is coached by FM Roderick Nava and San Beda under the tutelage of legendary Harold “Henrysky” Mariano.
Last year's Senior Division champion College of St. Benilde coached by 1994 Moscow Olympian gold medalist GM candidate Fernie Donguines blanked Mapua, 4-0, for a bright note after getting a bye in the first round.
The DLS-Saint Benilde team is composed of Jimson Bitoon, Narquinden Reyes, Renie Malupa and Narquindel Reyes who beat Mapua’s Adrian Perez, Ergin Pelayo, Francis Ligon, and Oliver Revalo, on Board 1 to 4, respectively.
Other matches saw, San Sebastian blank Arellano University, 4-0, San Beda crushing Jose Rizal University, 3-1, and Letran trampling EAC, 4-0.
Action resumes on Saturday and Sunday at the same venue starting at 1:30 p.m. (PNA)
