PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, July 17 -– The city government of Puerto Princesa will showcase its ever-famous Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) in Department of Tourism’s “Wonder to Discover” at Clamshell in Intramuros on July 28 to August 10 this year.

City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn believed that the “Wonders to Discover” will promote not only the underground river, which has already qualified in the third round of the New 7 Wonders of Nature (N7WN) Search, but also other tourist destinations in Region IV which possess their respective unique features as world-class Philippine tourism products.

“The program of DOT will help Puerto Princesans promote the underground river because aside from the destination booth that our City Tourism Office will install in Clamshell, we will also put up a voting center so that our visitors there will be encouraged to vote for our Philippine pride – the underground river”, Hagedorn said.

PPSRNP or the underground river successfully joined the rank of Top 77 candidates of the global search for new seven wonders of nature upon the closing of online voting last July 8.

After steadily enjoying the top rank for so many months in the second phase of the competition clashing with other 54 nominees, it finally ranked next to South America’s Amazon River under the Forests/National Parks/Nature Reserves category.

From the 77 finalists, the New7Wonders Panel of Experts headed by Prof. Federico Mayor, former director-general of UNESCO will choose the 28 official finalists which will join the third and last phase of the global competition. The result will be released on July 21, 14:07 local time (12:07 GMT) at the New7Wonders headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland.

The 7 wonders of nature will be declared on 2011. Majority of voters has likewise voted for Manila as the venue of the proclamation.

Meanwhile, the tourism promotion activities of DOT Region IV for CALABARZON started on July 13-25, 2009 and for the Mimaropa will begin on July 28 to August 10.

City Information Officer Alroben Goh said that after the activity, the city government of Puerto Princesa will join various travel marts to better promote the city’s top tourist attractions.

A promising economic boom is now felt in Puerto Princesa after its tourism industry finally regain its strength which suffered slowdown due to the Abu Sayyaf attack on Dos Palmas in 2001. (PNA)
