MALOLOS CITY, July 16 – Joint operatives of the Malolos City police station and the Bantay Dagat of the city government caught 21 fishermen using the illegal fishing method called “sud-sud” at the mouth of Manila Bay at dawn Wednesday.

Bulacan PNP officer-in-charge Sr. Supt. Diosdado Ramos said the illegal fishers were on board eight motorized bancas and were arrested while catching fish and other marine products using the “sud-sud” method which is not allowed under the Philippine Fisheries Law.

Ramos said the illegal method does not only catch small fishes and other marine creatures but it also destroys the marine habitat of the sea creatures.

Ramos said joint elements of the Malolos Police Station and the Bantay Dagat of Mayor Danilo Domingo are constantly patrolling the coastal areas of Malolos City to prevent illegal fishers from doing their activities.

The joint team seized eight motorized boats, eight sets of sud-sud paraphernalia such as nets, bamboo boom and 20 pieces of coolers containing assorted fish.

The arrested illegal fishers will be charged for violation of Section 26, 89 and 90 of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998. (PNA) LAP/Egamos/ps
