MANILA, July 11 — The selection of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to speak in behalf of Asia in next week’s Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Egypt is a signal honor for the country, according to Press Secretary Cerge Remonde.

In a radio interview, Remonde said no less than the head of the NAM Summit, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, personally handpicked President Arroyo to be the spokesperson for the heads of states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the region during the event slated July 15-16 in Sharm El-Sheikh.

“Madaming magagaling na leaders sa Asia but siya ang pinili na magsasalita for and in behalf of Asia,” he pointed out.

Next to the United Nations, NAM is the biggest international organization in the world with more than 100 teams and heads of government and state in attendance.

Remonde said most of NAM’s members are mini states that are members of the Organization of Islamic Conference. “There are so many opportunities for bilateral meetings among heads of state and heads of government attending the summit.” (PNA/OPS)
