SOFIA, July 11 — Customs officers at Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Varna had captured 714 liters of concentrated cocaine solution, local media reported on Friday.

The shipment was caught during a joint operation of the Customs Agency and the State National Security Agency (SNSA), in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The cocaine solution was found in 1,020 bottles of wine, in a container that was sent from Bolivia, and was loaded at the Arica port in Chile. The container arrived at Port Varna-West on June 28. The rest of the shipment contains bottles with actual wine.

The special operation was the result of a six-month investigation by the Customs Agency, SNSA and DEA.

Bulgaria straddles routes of international drug smugglers and routinely seizes large amounts of drugs on its borders with Turkey to the south, Romania to the north and Serbia to the east.

Over the last eight years, Bulgaria has confiscated over 21 tons of drugs, but it is certain that much more has slipped through. (PNA/Xinhua) ALM
