MANILA, June 24 — Eleven "Outstanding Manilans" were given recognition Wednesday by Mayor Alfredo S. Lim in simple rites at the Manila Hotel for serving as "sterling examples of what is the best and the brightest."

The event coincided with the celebration of the city’s 438th founding anniversary or "Araw ng Maynila" and was keynoted by Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

Lim, assisted by secretary to the mayor Atty. Rafaelito Garayblas and chief of staff Ric de Guzman, handed the awards with a call for the recipients to continue inspiring Filipinos with their achievements.

This year’s batch of awardees was led by former President Corazon Aquino (civic leadership and global diplomacy) who was represented by her son, Senator Benigno `Noynoy’ Aquino III; Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala (entrepreneurial leadership) who was represented by Ayala Land’s president Victoria Garchitorena; Henry Sy Sr. (business development); Eugenio Lopez III (telecommunications and broadcasting); Dr. Teresita Uytiepo-Quirino (education); Marixi Rufino-Prieto (print media advocacy); Regina Paz-Lopez (environmental advocacy); George S.K. Ty (corporate social responsibility); Miguel Castro-Enriquez (public service in tri-media); Senator Manuel Villar (public service) and Engr. Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr. (advocacy for truth).

The mayor said that as in previous years, this year’s outstanding Manilans are somehow rooted to the city either by birth, education or for reasons of work and livelihood.

“The determining criterion is how they have willingly and unselfishly contributed to the development and progress of the city of Manila and its inhabitants,” Lim added.

Lim also said in his speech that in the city of Manila, “We strictly adhere to the rule of law, transparency and honesty and that is why we give due recognition to advocates of truth, fairness and justice who relentlessly fight against corruption and courageously stand up for their convictions and principles.”

He noted that the 11 awardees have, one way or another, contributed largely to the successful implementation of the city government's 11-point agenda.

This, he said, includes giving free health services and medicines in the city’s four public hospitals, totally-free college education at the City College of Manila and the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and free burial services.

In his comebacking term as mayor, Lim said that tax revenues have also been spent on upgrading infrastructure, caring for the environment, providing low-cost housing, regulating markets and veterinary services and promoting interest in history and culture.

Lim also went on to clarify that what was actually established on June 24, 1571 was the Cabildo or city council, so that the "Araw ng Maynila" should be the anniversary of the Manila City Council. (PNA) scs/JES
