Treñas to attend GK Global Summit in USA

ILOILO CITY, June 9 – Mayor Jerry P. Treñas will join a delegation led by Philippine Vice President Noli de Castro in attending the Gawad Kalinga Global Summit 2009 in Harvard University in Boston and Cambridge, Massachussets, USA on June 12-16, 2009.

Treñas failed to attend the urban leaders planning summit slated in New York, USA last June 2-3, 2009 because he personally directed the city operations against the upsurge of dengue fever cases in this city.

The mayor is optimistic that this time he will be able to join thee GK global summit after he was assured by heath authorities that cases on dengue and typhoid are on manageable level.

The GK global summit will see Philippine leaders hosting GK villages in unveiling and converging a 21-year timeline vision dubbed as GK 2024 aimed to end poverty of some five million Filipino families and build an ambitious first-world Philippines program.

Treñas said summit participants will learn more about the emerging Asian model for community development and poverty alleviation and the Filipino response to the United Nation's Millennium Development goals that seeks to reduce poverty by half by 2015.

GK will unveil its 2024 vision during the summit that will outline road maps and plans for achieving the vision as well as provide successful program templates that can be adopted by other developing countries.

Aside from Philippine officials, the summit will be attended by GK founder Antonio Meloto, twins Jose Luis Oquiñena and Jose Mari Oquiñena, the executive director and GK "Isang Milyong Bayani" (GK1MB) head, respectively, and other GK officials and international donors and benefactors.

Treñas said that Iloilo City is hosting several GK villages such as in the Sooc, Arevalo area in partnership with Smart Telecommunications, at the San Isidro relocation site in Jaro district in partnership with city Cong. Raul Gonzalez Jr. and at the Bitoon relocation site.

Other Philippine delegates attending the global summit will include Taguig city mayor Dante Tinga and Makati mayor Jejomar Binay, among others. (PNA)
