MANILA, May 29 — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Friday welcomed back in Zamboanga City the three public school teachers who were released recently by their Abu Sayyaf kidnappers.

It was an emotionally-charged meeting as the newly-freed teachers shook hands with the President, according to a report by DZRB Radyo ng Bayan.

The teachers — Freires Quizon, Janette delos Reyes and Raphael Mayonado — were abducted by the Abu Sayyaf bandits four months ago off the island barangay of Ladang Gua, where they were teaching at the Ladang Gua Elementary School.

They were presented to President Arroyo during the inauguration of the Zamboanga Port Expansion Project this morning.

Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao Crisanto dela Cruz said persistent and strong government efforts led to the release of the teachers. No ransom was paid for their freedom, he added.

Despite their harrowing experience in the hands of their abductors, the three teachers have expressed their desire to remain in the service. They begged, however, to be assigned outside Ladang Gua. (PNA) scs/JCA
