PGMA inducts ex-priest as new PA for Mindanao

MANILA, May 29 — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inducted on Friday in Zamboanga City former priest Crisanto “Monsi” dela Cruz as Presidential Assistant for Western Mindanao, with the rank of Assistant Secretary.

The induction was a special feature of the inauguration of the Zamboanga Port Expansion Project, one of Dela Cruz’s concerns in his new position as the President’s resident representative in Zamboanga Peninsula.

Dela Cruz left the priesthood “with ecclesiastical permission” in 2006 to run for Zamboanga City mayor against reelectionist Mayor Celso Lobregat.

He lost his bid only by a couple of thousand votes and “conceded his defeat with humility and dignity” on the second day of the vote canvassing.

The former priest held various church positions in Zamboanga, including that of a parish priest of at least four parishes, director of the Immaculate Conception High School and administrator of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in La Purisima, Zamboanga.

In all his past assignments, he posted significant achievements and left long-lasting legacies.

Following his electoral loss in 2006, Monsi (short for monsignor) did not return to the priesthood.

He said he hopes to help the development of Zamboanga Peninsula as the alter ego of the President in his region. (PNA) scs/JCA
