MANILA, May 28 — The National Directorate of Lakas- CMD and the National Council of Kampi today affirmed the authority of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to appoint the interim members of the National Executive Committee of Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

The President is the national chairperson of Lakas-Kampi-CMD.

In a resolution passed during the joint meeting held today at the Manila Hotel, the party leaders also approved the constitution and by-laws of the merged Lakas-Kampi-CMD party.

The resolution also authorized the party’s “designated officers to petition the Commission on Elections for the accreditation and registration of Lakas-Kampi-CMD as a political party and to submit the constitution and by-laws as a supporting document therefore.”

The Lakas-Kampi-CMD leaders passed four other resolutions, 1) on the merger of two political parties, 2) committing to abide by and support the party’s choice and selection of national candidates in the 2010 elections, 3) a joint resolution approving and ratifying the constitution and by-laws of Lakas-Kampi-CMD and declaring its immediate effectivity, and 4) resolution commending President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for “successfully steering the country towards economic resiliency amid the global economic crisis and expressing strong support for her continuing efforts to achieve sustained national progress and development.”

The Lakas-Kampi-CMD leaders cited the success of the country under the President’s leadership in weathering the “global economic crisis through fiscal reforms, pump-priming and investments in infrastructure and human resources, social spending, and strong political leadership.”

The resolution pointed out that in 2007 the country achieved its highest gross domestic product (GDP) growth in 31 years at 7.2 percent and registered 32 quarters of continuous economic growth.

“There exists a consensus among foreign economic analysts and observers that the Philippines has handled the global economic crisis better than most other countries and is poised to outperform most of its East and Southeast Asian neighbors in the next few years,” the resolution said.

In another resolution, the Lakas-Kampi-CMD leaders committed themselves to abide by and support the party’s choice for national candidates in the 2010 presidential elections.

The resolutions were signed by Speaker Prospero Nograles, Lakas president; Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, Lakas CMD secretary-general; Interior and Local Governments Secretary Ronaldo Puno. (PNA) DCT/OPS/ssc
