MANILA, May 28 — In line with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Proclamation No. 1696 declaring 2009 as the Year of Baler, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) commemorated the 400th anniversary of Baler, Aurora with an art exhibit this afternoon.

NCCA Executive Director Cecile Guidote Alvarez led the opening of the exhibit held at the garden area of the Malacañang Museum in Manila.

Joining Alvarez were Aurora Gov. Bellaflor Angara Castillo, Aurora Rep. Juan Edgardo Angara, Deputy Executive Secretary Pilita Venturanza and Malacañang Museum Director Jeremy Barnes.

Dubbed “Baler: A State of Mind,” the celebration showcases paintings by members of the Dimalangat Artists Community (DAC) and photographs by the newly-formed Batang Aurora Camera Club.

The exhibit will run until June 11, 2009.

President Arroyo signed Proclamation No. 1696 on Dec. 24, 2008 to mark the quadricentennial foundation of Baler, Aurora and in recognition of the important role the town played in Philippine history and national development. (PNA)
