Lakas-CMD, Kampi merge to win in 2010 polls

MANILA, May 26 — The ruling administration parties, Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) today merged into a single party to ensure its victory in the 2010 polls.

A joint statement of Kampi Party President Luis R. Villafuerte and Speaker Prospero C. Nograles, Lakas-CMD president pointed out that among other advantages, a single political entity arising out of the merger, “will allow if not compel administration allies to field single electoral tickets at the local level, thus enabling themselves to work for the victory of national candidates with greater unity and focus.”

“We envision such a merger to be completed within the next forty five days,“ the statement said.

Officially, according to a joint resolution, the merged parties will be known as Lakas Kampi CMD, the successor of Lakas CMD and Kampi.

The newly merged party will have to seek accreditation and registration as a political party with the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Joint Resolution (JR) 2 of the merged parties also called for approving and ratifying the constitution and bylaws of Lakas Kampi CMD and declaring its immediate effectivity.

It seeks to designate officers to petition the Comelec for the accredition and registration of Lakas Kampi CMD as a political party and to submit the constitution and by-laws as a supporting document.

JR 3 affirmed the authority of the party chairman, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is to appoint the interim members of the national executive committee.

JR 4 calls for the support of the party's choice and selection of national candidates who shall banner the party and “lead it to victory in the 2010 synchronized national and local elections.”

JR 5 has commended the President for, “successfully steering the country towards economic recovery and resiliency amid the global economic crisis and expressing strong support for her continuing efforts to achieve sustained economic improvement and national development."

Meanwhile, Secretary Ronaldo V. Puno, Kampi chairman, told reporters that he would serve loyally whoever was at the helm.

”I have no pretensions of having the qualities of who are already there. I will serve loyally and truthfully and live up to the challenge,” said Puno.

Puno is acknowledged as the most successful campaign manager in Philippine politics, having supported the presidential bids of eventual winners like Fidel V. Ramos, Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. (PNA) DCT/wi/JF/ssc
