MATANAO, Davao del Sur, May 22 — A modern rice processing complex will be constructed in the municipality of Matanao in this province, funded through grant assistance from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) regional director Maria Lourdes Lim said the project is under the second phase of the Establishment of Modern Rice Processing Complex Project. It is one of the four rice processing complexes in the country recently approved by NEDA’s Investment Coordination Committee (ICC).
Lim said other complexes will be established in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan; Pototan, Iloilo; and Pilar, Bohol.
She said of the total budget of P785 million, P649 million is the grant component while P136 million will be the counterpart of the Philippine government through the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the local government units (LGUs).
More than 7,000 rice farmers in Matanao stand to benefit from the rice processing complex, which is expected to generate a total of 50 skilled and unskilled jobs, she said.
She also said the farmers will benefit from a patronage fee of one peso per kilogram of paddy rice.
She said for a 1.8-hectare rice field, which is the average land tenure of a farmer, with an average yield of 4.5 tons per hectare per cropping season, a farmer will get a total patronage fee of P16,500.00 per year for two cropping seasons.
On the other hand, the Regional Development Council (RDC) Davao has passed a resolution endorsing the project. (PNA) LAP/Judy G. Quiros/lvp
