TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, May 20 – A total of 295 babies were baptized in the two-day “Binyagan ng Bayan” (mass christening) in the municipalities of New Corella and Kapalong, sponsored by the provincial government of this province on May 14 and 15, respectively.

Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario, who stood as godfather to hundreds of children, most of them infants and children, were baptized at the San Isidro Labrador Parish Church in New Corella with Rev. Fr. Miguel Cabrera, celebrating the baptismal rites.

Meanwhile, in Kapalong town, aside from baptismal mass, Bishop Wilfredo Manlapaz of the Diocese of Tagum City celebrated the confirmation mass for some 311 Christian candidates, which was also sponsored by the Provincial Government of Davao del Norte.

The province initiated the mass christening of children in line with the spiritual and moral recovery component under the RDR WHEELS program of the governor. All church fees were shouldered by the province.

Del Rosario welcomed the new Christians, who also become his godchildren.

He said the event is very important in the life of the children.

“Baptism is an act of offering ourselves to God and recognizing the Christian Faith where we were born at,” he said.

He also urged the parents as fellow godparents to keep on nurturing the children in the right spiritual path.

The governor said it is not enough for the parents to bring the children and for the godparents to assist at the ceremony to make profession of the faith in the child’s name.

He said aside from providing their basic needs, parents are also obliged to give equally important spiritual needs of their children.

“I hope that we will continue to nurture our children into the path of spiritual maturity and righteousness as they grow older,” he added.

The baptism masses were held in time for the Parochial Fiesta celebrations of the two municipalities, in honor of San Isidro Labrador.

The governor also encouraged the parents to register their children in the next “Binyagan ng Bayan” at the Fatima Parish Church in Tagum City on June 28 and also on the last week of June at the San Isidro Labrador Parish Church in Sawata, San Isidro town.

A ceremony for the renewal of vows of couples who were married for eight years and above is also slated in Barangay Manay, Panabo City on June 27.

All the events will again be sponsored by the provincial government, in time for the weeklong celebration of the 42nd Araw ng Davao del Norte on July 1, del Rosario said. (PNA)
