DOF supports Manila Water concession contract extension

MANILA, May 8 – The Department of Finance (DOF) on Friday said it welcomed the decision of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) Board to extend for 15 years the concession of Manila Water Co. Inc. (MWCI).
Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, in a statement, said “the DOF supports the decision of MWSS Board to extend the concession contract of Manila Water.”
“This serves as a mitigating measure to temper water tariff increases while ensuring sustained private sector investment in the water sector amid this challenging times,” the statement added.
Relatively, the MWSS Board decision is still being reviewed by the DOF, said Finance Undersecretary Jeremias Paul in a news report.
Concession agreement earlier granted for Manila Water will expire on May 6, 2022.
Manila Water services Metro Manila’s eastern part that include the cities of Manila, Marikina, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Makati, Taguig, and some parts of Quezon City.
It also caters the areas of San Juan, Pateros, and some parts of Rizal province namely Antipolo, San Mateo, and Rodriquez. (PNA)
