GENERAL SANTOS CITY, May 5 -– Police authorities in Sultan Kudarat said a councilor from the remote mountain town of Sen. Ninoy Aquino survived an ambush on Monday evening and sustained only minor injury.

Gil Batilo, a former journalist turned politician, was on his way home from the municipal hall, when waylaid by still unidentified armed men who used high-powered guns.

Sultan Kudarat police director Sr. Supt Benhur Monggao said Batilo managed to maneuver his motorbike to safety despite a gunshot wound in his leg.

Batilo suspects that a group opposing the incumbent town mayor was behind the attack.

“They have accused me of supporting mayor (Rafael) Flauta,” Batilo said, referring to the camp of Flauta’s rival Dante Manga-an.

The Commission on Elections en banc has recently decided in favor to Manga-an’s petition against Flauta, triggering demonstrations by supporters of the rival politicians at the municipal hall.

Batilo said he was at the municipal hall on Monday to help pacify the opposing camps, instead, he was accused as being a supporter of Flauta.

Manga-an, however, denied he has a hand in the incident saying the councilor is a long-time friend.

I have nothing against him, Manga-an said, referring to Batilo.

Monggao said they will look deeper into the incident and determine who were the perpetrators. (PNA)
