MANILA, April 28 — The much-awaited multi-stage road cycling race for the summer season, Padyak Pinoy, reels off May 8 to 15 at Taguig City in Metro Manila as starting point.

The eight-day race, dubbed as the "Tour of Champions," will feature veterans as well as novice cyclists from all over the country.

Fifteen teams composed of five cyclists per team are deliberately designed to allow team members better coordination and more effective communications among themselves in strategy planning of their winning stage formula.

Tanduay once again keeps the race alive by being this year's presentor.

Other sponsors have also emerged, particularly SMART who has developed its expanded sports program to include cycling.

Air 21 continues the tradition with its major sponsorship while others such as WOW Magic Sing and Columbia Sports promise to make this coming race something to watch out for.

Former PhilCycling president Bert Lina expressed optimism that with this Tour of Champions, "we will not only see new faces but a more united effort among cycling groups, race organizers and other sport sponsors to achieve a performance worthy of bringing the Philippines more awards in the future."

The Padyak Pinoy race will bring the cyslists to the northern provinces of Pampanga, Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Benguet and the City of Baguio.

Padyak Pinoy's trademark stage, the "Ocho-ocho" or the difficult zigzag road in Baguio City, will again prove to be the most challenging of all eight stages.

Awarding ceremonies will be held in Baguio in the evening of May 15 where major sponsors and other provincial and local officials are expected to attend. (PNA)
