MANILA, April 23 (PNA) – -College of St. Benilde outduelled University of the Philippines in a thrilling five-setter, pulling off a 17-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 15-9 victory to open its campaign in the Shakey's V-League sixth season on a winning note at The Arena in San Juan Thursday.

It was an inspiring win for the Lady Blazers, who only won once in 14 games in last year’s first conference topped by Adamson and again went one out of seven in the second conference ruled by San Sebastian.

The victory, fashioned out in nearly two hours of hardwork, also served as a big welcome for new coach Thelma Barina-Rojas, also the head coach of the RP team in this year’s SEA Games in Laos.

“We are still adjusting that’s why I tried to come up with new combinations,” said Barina-Rojas, member of the national team that last won a SEA Games gold in 1993 in Singapore.

Guest player Maureen Penetrante unleashed a 20-point performance, including 17 kills and two services aces, while Cindy Velasquez and Giza Yuma churned out 13 hits apiece while Ren Agero held the team together with her set plays as the Taft-based squad proved steadier in the end of a see-saw contest to prevail.

Four UP players scored in double figures with guest player Rubie de Leon tossing in 16 hits, Rebecca Montero scoring 15, and Danielle Castaneda and Southlyn Ramos chipping in 12 each. But the Lady Maroons lost steam down the stretch, dropping a tight four-set clash before eventually yielding the match.

It was UP's second straight loss in the tournament sponsored by Shakey's Pizza, sponsored by Sports Vision and backed by Mikasa, Accel and OraCare. For details, log on to www.v-league.ph.

The Lady Blazers took a 20-13 lead in the fourth behind Yumang’s down-the-line hit. But the Maroons fought back to within, 19-21, before Kwan took over to preserve the win and force the decider.

With Kwan, Yumang, Penetrante and Velasquez combining, the Lady Blazers controlled the fifth set and built enough cushion to thwart off the Maroons’ last-ditch bid to turn the game around.

Meanwhile, the Adamson-UST encounter, still being played at presstime, will be telecast today from 2-4 p.m. on NBN 4, according to the organizing Sports Vision. (PNA)<br> DCT/LOR/PR
