COTABATO CITY, April 23 – Philippine Army bomb experts defused a bomb found inside a garbage bin at the entrance of the Grotto of Mary Immaculate grounds in Sitio Broce, Barangay Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.

A certain Crisanto Dos, a caretaker at the Grotto grounds, found the bomb around 3:00 p.m. today.

Dos said he swiftly informed co-workers in the area on the bomb and they in turn called authorities for assistance.

“I was sifting through the garbage bin to empty it when I saw two sets of wires attached to a timing device inside the container that prompted me to call for my colleagues and informed them about my discovery,” he said.

Members of the Army bomb experts promptly arrived at the scene to defuse the explosive, he said.

Investigation on the incident is going on.

Catholic residents in Cotabato frequent the grotto in nearby Maguindanao province and it has been the primary prayer locale of Christians for over a decade now.

The cavern-cum-natural park also serves as home of the priests under the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) congregation.

The OMI spearheaded the spread of Catholic faith in the Cotabato area in the 1950s. (PNA)
